Grotto may mean “cave” in Italy, but in Delaware it means pizza – lot’s of pizza! Placed in a row, the number of Grotto Pizza pies sold each year would stretch beyond the length of Delaware and Pennsylvania combined! Grotto Pizza was founded in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1960 by 17 year old Dominick Pulieri along with his brother-in-law Joe Paglianite and sister Mary Jean. At that time, pizza slices sold for 20 cents each, and a whole pizza sold for $1.60. But business was less than booming at the start. On Grotto Pizza’s first day of business, only 2 pizzas were sold.
