The scoop: you don't even have to taste the food at a salt & battery to fall in love. it happ.. read moreens the first time you inhale the shop's salty air. when that smell hits you, whole sections of your brain re-wire themselves to focus on achieving your new life goal: to eat everything that's cooking in mat arnfield's fryers. that noble list includes locally-caught pollock, sole, and haddock, all fried according to uk tradition (arnfield's been a fryman since he was nine), in addition to perfect, golden chips (made with local potatoes) and even a handful of mars bars. that last one's a glasgow thing, but we'll be more than happy to make it our own. scout notes: a salt & battery smells exactly the way i imagine heaven does. a small shop with seating for just a few (many orders go right back out the door), the air's as inviting as the staff. on my first visit, mat arnfield and his kitchen team were decked out in "cod save the queen" shirts and singing pink floyd tunes between orders; even if they weren't cranking out killer food, you'd be inclined to hang out just for fun. what they're doing with oil and fry baskets, though, is nothing short of flawless, praise that's been well documented in the press and on tv. one wall of the shop has a framed scorecard from throwdown with bobby flay, filled in with words like "excellent," "silky," and "perfect." (mat won the cook off.) an amalgamation of the different types of fish & chip stands that are found across the uk, a salt & battery features several locally-caught fish that range from mild to flavorful, in addition to classic sides and imported beers. mat suggests that newcomers start with a standard: pollock and chips. on my first visit, i did just that, and dug into the gorgeous looking half-pound of slab of fish so quickly i accidentally skipped the vinegar. mat rectified the situation, and from there i ate in giddy silence, picking perfectly textured flakes of pollock out of the bed of fries, before burrowing my way to the bottom of the basket. once you hit that, there's only one more thing to do, and that's choose between the various fried candy bars on offer. even if it's just to have the story. menu highlights: chips, $4/$6 onion rings, $4 mushy peas, $4 pollock, sole, or haddock, $6/$10 fish cakes, $8 deep fried mars bar, $4 hours: monday saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
