Scout notes: if barbecue is a religion in texas (and it is; if you disagree, you obviously are.. read moren't from around here), then mike anderson's bbq is one of its holiest houses of worship. located way out on harry hines blvd., just down from the parkland memorial complex, the restaurant's namesake has been preaching to his loyal congregation since the early 80's. at this point, mike anderson and his crew have the sermon down pat. the first thing you need to know about this smoked meat temple is that the food is served ltexas-style.r this means, essentially, like a cafeteria. take your tray and work your way down the line, filling your plate as you go. this is great, because the aforementioned congregation does come in droves; the line is less daunting when you know it's moving at a steady clip, unimpeded by waiters. also, in keeping with the texas-style dogma, all the meats served at mike anderson's bbq are slow smoked over green east texas hickory wood. as it is written (in bbq sauce), so shall it be done. it should also be noted that your window for salvation is maddeningly short. mike anderson's bbq is only open for lunch (hence the lines). and, in a metaphor busting bit of irony, they're also closed on sunday. a sign hanging in the dining room helpfully points out that mike anderson's bbq serves roughly 100,000lbs of brisket, not to mention 25,000lbs of pork ribs and 5,000 gallons of sauce each and every year. it's easy to see why they've racked up such staggering numbers; their barbecue is as delicious as the staff is friendly, and they give you a ton of it. nowhere is that illustrated better than in the spudzilla, a mike anderson's original and customer favorite. the spudzilla starts with a baked potato larger than your head (i assume these are grown using some sort of outer space technology). said uber-spud is then absolutely stuffed-to-bursting with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, onion and a double helping of brisket or hot links or pulled pork or any of their boneless meats. it's gargantuan, and is also the reason they invented doggy bags. if you're looking for something a little less akin to mountain climbing, their bbq dinner plates are a (slightly) more reasonable amount of food, plus you get to partake in their wide variety of fresh-made sides. zippy jalapeno-spiked pinto beans, maybe, or the creamy garlic & cheddar smashed potatoes. the lcheezy corn bake,r which is exactly what it sounds like, is a winner as well. menu highlights: spudzilla, $12 bbq dinner plate, $12.50 brisket sandwich plate, $10 pork rib sandwich plate, $11 hours of operation: monday n saturday, 10 am to 2:30 pm closed sunday
