$7.50 for $15.00 - Genre-defying Jazz Quintet Kneebody, with Spare Parts

Many have attempted to classify Kneebody's music, but, so far, none of these labels have stuck.. read more. A quintet of expert instrumentalists, including a saxophonist, trumpeter, keyboardist, electric bassist and drummer, Kneebody looks like a jazz-fusion band. But their influences draw on everyone from D'Angelo to Elliott Smith to Bill Frisell and Miles Davis. They combine the sonic landscapes of Radiohead with the improvisational freedom of Brad Mehldau. They've even invented their own unique cueing system that allows each musician to instantly change the tempo, key, style or anything else he can think of. Incredibly, the music doesn't just sound like a free-for-all; the compositions are nuanced and structured. In 2009, Kneebody and Theo Bleckmann scored a Grammy nomination for their arrangements of 20th-century American composer Charles Ives' songs. Now they're bringing their unique sound to City Winery Chicago. Opening the show is funk-jazz trio Spare Parts.

Real classy place to see a show. The drink selection is pretty good. We sat on the far stage right side but it still sounded great. They had side fills and a bunch of little front fills for those of us that were below the main speakers. Nice touch that shows they care about sound.
