Scout notes: finally! you don't have to go through canada to get to cuba! thanks to cubano's i.. read moren silver spring, all you need to do is hop on the metro. from there, you'll just need to walk a short distance to enjoy the delicioso delights of this often off-limits island, like ropa vieja, a cuban national dish that featurs shredded beef simmered with tomatoes, red peppers, onions and spice, slow-roasted cuban pork, and, perhaps most importantly, the mojito. these mojitos are made the old-fashioned way, with fresh mottled mint, delicious cuban rum and garnished with a slice of real sugar cane. "i've probably made over a million!" noted the cuban bartender of a distinguished age. and after tasting the refreshing, concoction he expertly whipped up for us, we believe him. this is next-level perfection. not to be overlooked in this brightly decorated family-run establishment is the food. the recipes all come from the owner, adolfo's grandmother, and they're so good that washington post food critic tom siestema even included cubano's in his all-city dining guide. and while we're not professional food raters like tom, we like to think we can tell you whether something tastes good or not and, trust us, everything on our plates at cubano's tasted great. "we're family-run," said millie, adolfo's sister. "and our recipes and presentation of our dishes reflect the pride we feel in our restaurant." taking another look at that photo above, featuring a sizzling plate of camarones al ajillo and a chicken dish that knocked our calcetines off with it's righteous marinade, you can see cubano is more than lip service. it's the real deal. menu highlights: empanaditas olga, $6.50 avocado salad, $11.95 sandwich cubano, $14.95 cubano's signature paella for two, $42.95 flanes maria vanilla o coco, $6.50 mojito, $7.95 hours: monday - thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. friday - saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. sunday, 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. all sorts of other awesomeness.
