The scoop: if there's one thing we love, it's a bar that knows how to take care of its regula.. read morers, and that can make everyone who walks in want to come back for more. for 20 years, down the hatch has been creating fans nightly with their insane drink specials and atomic wings awesomeness (tater tots with gravy!). you won't even need our deal to check out most of the cheap booze; let us hook you up with 50% off of the non-specials, including an extensive snack menu, and we'll help you get acquainted with your new favorite place to grab a beer, watch the game, and play some foosball. you don't even need to thank us. just save us a stool. scout notes: in order to get to down the hatch, you'll first need to head down the stairs in front of the sign on west 4th. the bar's subterranean locale makes it as cozy and sturdy as a ship's hull, with low wooden ceilings and the kind of bar stools you want to spend whole weekends on, drinking beer by the pitcher and watching the game. you'll find both things in spades: there are 9 flat screen hdtvs and enough domestic and imported brews to change things up all night. when your team's not on, you can rally your friends for a game of beer pong or foosball (it's one of the last real foosball tables in the city!), at least until you decide what to eat. down the hatch's kitchen is run by atomic wings, which means it may take you a second to determine how you're going to organize your feast. you can start with onion rings or atomic wing's famous wafer fries or deep fried mac and cheese, but then you're going to need to get yourself to the main event. my recommendation? order by the bucket. and if you're ordering the "abusive," "nuclear," or "suicidal" levels of heat, make sure to warn your friends and have an extra pitcher on hand for the first bite. my favorite thing about hanging out at down the hatch is the way it feels like a neighborhood secret, even after 20 years in business. there's something rewarding about sneaking down here off the street, and whiling away an evening with friends tucked in at one of new york's true staple bars. there's no kitsch or signature cocktail nonsense going on here; this is a new york bar filled with locals who know that a good night out requires a friendly crowd, great shot specials, and bar food worth eating both before and after you've downed a little booze. menu highlights: famous wafer fries, $3.79 tater tots, $3.99 deep fried mac & cheese, $6.99 the atomic chicken sandwich, $9.99 deluxe bacon cheeseburger, $10.99 hours: open daily, 12 p.m. to 4 a.m.
