The theater opened in 1963 with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater's founder. It was created to host performances that were removed from the atmosphere of Broadway.

Just saw "My Fair Lady" July 5, 2014 and it was absolutely quality work! What a wonderful production! Thank you, Guthrie! I'm still singing the songs!

Saw the Vanya play last night, not so good. Seemed like a mash-up of old sit com shows like All in the Family and Sanford and Son. All characters so stereotypical, no nuance--a Guthrie trademark--and so very long. Very hard to engage any of the story, but the cast seemed to be trying their best.
