Scout notes: the last time i stopped by royale, a server was putting the finishing touches on.. read more a chalkboard sign that read "best burger on the block." talk about an act of modesty. anyone who's stopped in to this ultimate neighborhood bar knows that the bacon royale isn't just the king of alphabet city. it's the best for miles, especially considering the atmosphere that comes with it; there are plenty of lovely bars around these parts, but royale sets the standard, hands down. whatever the day you've had, dropping by royale in the golden hour (skip the post-work rush, wait for a late dinner) will ensure it all ends on a high note. a cheese-coated, bacon-laced high note. when i moved to the area, royale was the very first bar i visited. it was cold out, and i selected it based on sheer proximity and the promise of a cheap beer. what i found inside made it one of my favorite weeknight bars to date: genuinely welcoming staff, a heated garden, low-key, chatty locals, and a burger i later learned is resoundingly beloved in the east village. throw in all the right beers on tap and great onion rings and you've got the ultimate enticement to start searching for an apartment in the neighborhood. why live further from all the ingredients of happiness than you absolutely must? menu highlights: the royale, $7 royale with cheese, $8 chicken fingers, $8.50 crispy chicken sandwich, $9 hours: monday thursday, 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. friday, 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. saturday, 1 p.m. to 4 a.m. sunday, 1 p.m. to 12 a.m.
