  Scout notes: here's a new year's resolution that will be a pleasure to keep: "break out of yo.. read moreur 2011 food rut." give your usual neighborhood haunts a break, and use 2012 to experience the full diversity of the new york restaurant scene. to kick things off properly, start at sigiri, one of the nation's best outposts of sri lankan cuisine. you'll find it tucked near your favorite indian spots, quietly serving some of the most brightly flavored, intriguingly composed dishes available anywhere in the city. this is sri lankan street food, laced with coconut and curries and a level of spice that you'll think about for days after your first visit. it's just the right jolt you need for january. it's not often that a meal will genuinely surprise me, but on my first visit to sigiri, every dish exceeded my already-lofty expectations. if you sit down anticipating a twist on the southeast asian dishes you know by heart chicken curry, for example you'll be blown away by the difference and searing deliciousness of the sri lankan preparation. the heat, textures, and flavors will stick in your imagination and bring you back for more, especially after you've tucked in with the kotthu roti, a popular mound of thin, shredded bread, vegetables, egg, and beef. combine it with an order of aaapa, a basket of thin, bowl-shaped pancakes served with spicy grated coconut, and you'll wonder aloud (literally) how there aren't hundreds of sri lankan restaurants in every town. then you'll realize it's 'cause sigiri already has them all beat. menu highlights: gothamba roti (2 pieces), $6.95 pol roti, $9.95 indi aappa, $11.50 devilled specialities, $14.50-$16.95 chicken curry, $10.50 hours: open daily, 12:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. (closed sundays between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.)
