The scoop: when the deli guy knows your sandwich order by heart, and you can name all the hot.. read more buffet options at the corner bodega, it's official: you're in a lunch rut. luckily, tina's has what it takes to break your routine; in the same time it takes to grab a salad, you could be at this cuban hotspot stocking up on outstanding ropa vieja, shredded pork, and sweet plantains. they'll pack it for you to take back to your desk, of course, or you can pull up a seat in the chill, tropical-toned dining area, and reclaim your lunch hour for good. best part? there are rotating daily specials, so even if you come every day, you'll never wind up back in that rut. scout notes: the sandwiches alone at tina's make it worth a regular stop. once you've had their cubano, a pressed sandwich filled with roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, mayo and mustard, you feel a little sad that you've only just now discovered it. this version of the cuban classic is substantial and flavorful, and matched in desirability by all of the others on the list: the fried pork (masitas de puerco) is shockingly good with its sweet plantains and onions; the steak sandwich is one of the area's best. pair them all with tina's delicious papa rellena (think mashed potatoes with spiced beef stew) and a passionfruit or tamarindo shake, and you'll have turned lunch back into the best part of the day. the real draw at tina's, of course, are the rich, hearty entrees, an aromatic tour through cuba's culinary hits. there's ropa vieja and shrimp in garlic sauce, spicy grilled chicken and oxtail stew. the daily specials highlight some of the best flavors ever to come out of havana; stop by thursdays for a killer chicken fricassee or pork chops in red sauce, or on fridays for the kind of goat stew that's worth looking forward to all week. i like to bolster each dish with arroz moro, rice and beans mixed together, and then slather the lot of it with tina's ridiculous homemade green sauce, a spicy concoction found on every table. it's reason enough to say goodbye to your deli guy. menu highlights: papa rellena, $1.50 fried sweet plaintains, $1.99 ropa vieja, $9 roast pork, $9 shrimp in garlic sauce, $11 hours: monday friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
