    Scout notes: is there any cold-weather ailment a little panang curry can't solve? we think not.. read more. which is exactly why we're planning to set up a small encampment outside the doors of wild ginger, the thai restaurant this close to the perimeter that draws folks from all over town with the enticing aromas coming out of their kitchen. the husband-and-wife venture has been a chamblee (but also kind of dunwoody) mainstay since 2006, a favorite among families in the 'hood, weary perimeter travelers who stop in for a mid-commute spicy pick-me-up, and people like me: the kind who's willing to drive up to 285 to experience the rare combination of authentic thai food and a bit of cool ambiance, too. after sipping a little thai tea and witnessing the pyromaniacal awesomeness of the "volcano bowls" of soup (hint: there are projectile flames involved), you'll be willing to take the trip too. the most popular items on wild ginger are the usual favorites: heady curries, rich and smooth coconut soup, and the unofficial litmus test of thai restaurants, the pad thai. these are what people come back again and again for, and after having a taste of the panang curry and a warm, spicy soup, i understood why. of course, it also helps that wild ginger tries to add a little atmosphere to the mix. now, don't get me wrong: i have nothing against plain white tile floors and decor a la cafeteria when the food speaks for itself. but you can't blame a scout for wanting to enjoy one's surroundings while plowing through a bowl of tom kha kai soup, and wild ginger gets this. their efforts to make folks feel relaxed and at home stem partly from their goal to give locals a place to come together and hang out, in an area where those gathering places are few and far between. (victor also told me that they plan to transition the patio into a late-night outdoor cafe of sorts, for these very purposes.) bringing neighbors together over delicious food in a cool atmosphere? sounds like a solid formula to us. menu highlights: tom kha kai soup, $4.75 (small) - $9.75 (large) wild ginger seafood soup/po tak, $14.95 pad thai, $9.95 pepper steak, $10.25 massaman curry, $10.95 panang curry, $10.95 hours: lunch: sunday - friday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. dinner: sunday - thursday, 3 p.m. - 10 p.m. friday, 3 p.m. - 11 p.m. saturday, 5 p.m. - 11 p.m.
