Grotto may mean “cave” in Italy, but in Delaware it means pizza – lot’s of pizza! Grotto Pizza was founded in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in 1960 by 17 year old Dominick Pulieri along with his brother-in-law Joe Paglianite and sister Mary Jean. At that time, pizza slices sold for 20 cents each, and a whole pizza sold for $1.60. But business was less than booming at the start. On Grotto Pizza’s first day of business, only 2 pizzas were sold. The problem? Virtually no one in Rehoboth knew what pizza was. Confident that he would create a market for his product, Dominick and his family set out to introduce Rehoboth vacationers to the great taste of Grotto Pizza. Working from a small take-out stand, Dominick mixed the dough and baked the pizzas while Mary Jean stood on the sidewalk handing out free samples to skeptical locals and vacationers. In the years that followed, Grotto Pizza continued to grow and prosper. In 1963, Grotto Pizza opened its South Boardwalk location. That location was later expanded to include Papajohn’s Beach Bar (named after the buildings owner). In 1967, the original Rehoboth Avenue take-out stand moved five doors down to its present location in the “Arcade Building”. Still a “Pizza Only” enterprise, Grotto Pizza continued as a seasonal business opening in May and closing in October. To enjoy the great taste of Grotto Pizza year round, customers would scurry in at the end of each summer to order stacks of pizzas for their freezers. Through the years, Grotto Pizza has continued to expand, opening more seasonal and year round locations in Southern Delaware and eventually bringing the “legendary taste” to six locations in Northern Delaware. Although Grotto Pizza has expanded it’s menu and its size from that tiny pizza only take-out stand, Grotto Pizza continues to adhere to it’s philosophy of quality food and friendly hospitality. Even today, it’s not unusual to find Dominick stationed at the pizza table in one of the restaurants, making pizzas and serving customers with the same quality and care that has made Grotto Pizza a family tradition for nearly a half of a century!
