Russell Cellular was established in December of 1993 as a home based business, owner Jeff Russell began as lone sales rep selling from the trunk of hi.. read mores old Dodge Omni. Formerly a turkey farmer, Jeff was intimidated by big business and large towns. His fear of cold stopping caused him to develop a strong referral program with the farmers and small business owners that were his first customers. Jeff developed his sales technique and soon hired a few outside sales representatives, all of them selling out of their cars. By the end of 1994, a customer base had been established and two retail locations were opened. Kym, Jeff's wife and business partner, began managing the in home office allowing Jeff to focus on sales, marketing, and finances. The headquarters were moved out of the Russell's home when the first Springfield store opened in 1996. Russell Cellular was officially recognized as Alltel's top selling agent in 1997. Additional stores were added, administration staff was hired, and a sales manager was brought in to focus on the rapidly growing sales force. Sales continued to soar and Jeff Russell was awarded the 1998 SBA Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Kansas City District. The millennium ushered in an even more aggressive business plan beginning with the acquisition of a longstanding competitor in Springfield, MO. Several new locations were added as Russell Cellular expanded into new markets. In September 2002 the company celebrated the grand opening of their 40th store. The year ended on a high note as Jeff Russell was awarded the SBA Small Business Person of the Year and Russell Cellular was recognized as one of Springfield's Small Businesses of the Year. In 2003 Russell Cellular began selling satellite television service and expanded their support team to include a division of professional satellite installers. The Springfield Business Journal named Russell Cellular as the areas fastest growing company 2004. Continued expansion into Southern Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas led to the acquisition of other agents and corporate locations. Russell Cellular advanced to become a National Agent for Alltel in 2006. The decision to brand and remodel stores to look and operate more like Alltel corporate stores proved to be a good one as 2007 and 2008 were record breaking years in sales as well as profits.
