It was the Roaring Twenties and the country was prospering, when James Sarni, Sr. and his wife Mary decided to open a drycleaning and tailoring shop a.. read moret 2 Winter Place in the heart of Boston next to the Locke-Ober Restaurant. Mr.James Sarni Sr. decided to offer a revolutionary service called pick-up and delivery. Automobiles were still quite expensive back then, so James Sarni decided his best means of transportation was horse and buggy. The customers loved this convenience but the processing time was quite long. Mr. Sarni was dry cleaning their clothes in gasoline and had to wait several days for the smell to dissipate. Not long after Sarni Cleaners opened, a company called Dupont Chemical came calling. They had just invented a new odorless chemical that would reduce the processing time of dry cleaning from days to hours. Dupont Chemical chose Sarni Cleaners to test the new chemical, perchlorethelyne and a partnership was born. Sarni Cleaners continued to prosper with the addition of sons Ralph, Jack and James, Jr. The Sarni boys expanded the company by the addition of retail locations and cleaning plants. They also expanded to the Metropolitan Boston suburbs. Today, some 75 years later, the Sarni tradition of quality and service continues. Ron Sarni and Ken Sarni, the grandsons of the original Mr. Sarni, are bringing an influx of new ideas to the third generation of the family business.
