About
Carpet Mart was founded by Sam Longwill (1911-1998) in May of 1967. The first store opened as Airbase Carpet Mart and was located in New Castle, Delaware, in a quonset-hut adjacent to the New Castle Air Force Base. Sam started selling carpet and rugs at deep discounts by buying factory overstocks and remnants from dozens of mills at the same time when wall-to-wall carpeting was into its new trend. The result? Customers found that they could receive the look and fashion of high-end carpeting at a fraction of the cost of carpet stores. Additionally, customers found that not only could they save money, they could also take their new carpet with them that very same day. What evolved into a Longwill family run business, a second store was opened in Dover, Delaware, in 1969. With its continued success and customer popularity, throughout the seventies Carpet Mart established five stores in Eastern Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley. The eighties brought the family acquisition of Lomax Rug Company in Philadelphia, which had operated since 1892 as a nationally known brand. Since then, Carpet Mart opened its ninth store in Exton, PA, in 2001. Today, Carpet Mart still operates on the strong family oriented traditions and values as it did with its founder Sam Longwill in 1967. With over 300 employees, Carpet Mart remains the leading independent floor covering store chain in the nation offering the same great values and customer service as it did opening day over 35 years ago.
