About
One day back in 1967, Dave DeBruler and Jean
Vitale were given the opportunity to purchase the
first Beef-A-Roo restaurant. Despite a lack of
restaurant experience or training, they both said
'Yes!' Beef-A-Roo has been a Rockford tradition
ever since.
Beef-A-Roo has seen many changes in the 40 years
that followed. The original menu included beef and
ham sandwiches, potato chips, and soft drinks,
which were served at a walk-up counter for take-
out dining. By the mid-70's, menu expansion was in
full swing. Cheeseburgers and french fries were
the newest craze. The introduction of soft-serve
chocolate shakes also gained instant menu
popularity. In the 80's, Beef-A-Roo offered more
spacious dining areas and the latest restaurant
innovation: drive-through windows. Drive-through
dining added a new level of convenience and
service for our customers.
By this time, Beef-A-Roo had developed into a
local chain with 6 locations in the Rockford area.
While we continued to add new menu options (chili,
soup, salads, chicken and turkey sandwiches, just
to name a few), we also began to explore the
concept of using a theme for restaurant design and
decor. Riverside Beef-A-Roo was built using the
nostalgia of the '50's and '60's, and soon became
known as the Rock 'N Roll Beef-A-Roo. Customer
appreciation for this unique and fun place to dine
resulted in our changing three other locations
into this same theme.
With the construction of the North Alpine Road
Beef-A-Roo in 1999, we chose to use a North Woods
Lodge theme. When the decision was made to rebuild
the original Beef-A-Roo in Loves Park, we chose
Engine Company No.1: Firehouse Beef-A-Roo as our
theme. All our theme restaurants offer an unique
dining experience. We hope you will have an
opportunity to visit them soon.
There are some things that haven't changed at
Beef-A-Roo! We remain committed to offering the
best food and service at affordable prices in a
pleasurable dining atmosphere. Though still
actively involved in the day to day operation, the
original partners have been joined by other family
members to assure that Beef-A-Roo will be here to
serve it's customers' needs for many years to
come. We appreciate the loyal support we have
received from our customers and are proud to have
been a part of the Rockford/Loves Park business
community for the past 40 years.
