About
Jack’s, Alabama’s first fast-food restaurant chain, opened in 1960 in Homewood, Alabama as a walk-up hamburger stand. The original menu was simple, fifteen cent hamburgers and fries and twenty cent shakes. The legacy of Jack’s began. The menu was limited but people all over Birmingham discovered the delicious food served. Due to Jack’s popularity, restaurants opened throughout the Southeastern part of the country. Jack’s grand-openings were a big hit with parents and kids with special appearances from local celebrities. Children received 100% of Jack’s marketing. Jack’s sponsored Cousin Cliff, Bozo the Clown and Sergeant Jack, who was named after the hamburger chain. Many Birmingham residents remember growing up with Cousin Cliff, enjoying hamburgers and singing the original Jack’s jingle on the Cousin Cliff Show. The jingle was composed by Henry Kimbrell and produced by Ed Boutwell
