Michaels Jewelers is a family-run business whose tradition spans over four generations. Michaels Jewelers was founded in 1885 by Abraham L. Michaels, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1905, the family moved to New York City and established a wholesale jewelry business named "Irving Michaels & Company," founded by Abraham's son Irving Michaels, Sr. Their first U.S. jewelry store opened its doors in New York City in 1911. Irving Sr. and his wife Martha, moved the firm to New Haven, CT in 1915, and opened the first Connecticut store in partnership, as Michaels Maurer. After a brief period, the couple bought out Mr. Maurer's interest and in 1916, a second Michaels Jewelers store opened in Bridgeport. Three years later the Waterbury store was launched and by 1926, Michaels Jewelers expanded to Meriden, Hartford, Torrington, Bristol, and Providence, Rhode Island. Several years later, in 1948, Middletown and Manchester joined the Michaels' empire.
