About
he story of Northwest Tire & Hi-Tech Service begins on New Year's Day in 1971. On that day, Jim Faught a 13-year veteran with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in the Detroit district was driving through Flint, Michigan while returning home with his family from the nearby town of Frankenmuth. On Clio Road in Flint, Jim saw a closed building that at one time had been Spiegel Catalog Outlet. Being an entrepreneur at heart he thought that the location would be a fine place for a tire and auto service store. After further investigation of the site and lots of good old-fashioned hard work, he opened his first store in August of that year as Northwest Firestone, Inc. From those humble beginnings, in that small five bay store with three employees, the company grew. By 1977 Jim had outgrown the Clio Road location and built a brand new store featuring 11 service bays on Pierson Road in Flint. Also, by 1977 Jim was selling multiple brands of tires and changed the company's name to Northwest Tire & Service. The 1980's began with the auto industry being besieged with foreign competition resulting in the slower production of automobiles. This meant hard times for Flint as many autoworkers were either laid off or relocated to other cities. Despite that, Northwest opened a second store on South Dort Highway in Flint. The Dort Highway store was an immediate success and Northwest Tire & Service was firmly established as a dominant force in the Flint market for tires, custom wheels and automotive service. Success continued and by 1983 Jim was looking to grow again. 1983 also was the beginning of Northwest's supplier relationship with the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Northwest took over an ailing Goodyear location on Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw, Michigan, and by using the same formula of quality, fast service for tires and auto repairs at prices that provide good value the store quickly turned into a winner. Two more Goodyear locations were purchased in Flint in 1985 on Miller Road and Court Street. Another Saginaw store was opened downtown in 1986. A sparkling new eight bay store was built in 1988 on Gratiot Road in Shields, followed by the addition of a store in Okemos, Michigan in 1991. Two more stores, on State Street in Saginaw and in Midland, in 1995. In 2006, Jim Faught sold Northwest to his son AJ who has worked for the company since 1981. In early 2007, AJ purchased four more stores, two located in Grand Rapids, one in Walker and another in Battle Creek, Michigan. This brings the total number of stores to its current 14. Many competitors have come and gone and Northwest continues to grow. This growth is directly attributed to the efforts of all Northwest Tire & Service employees, to make sure that all our customers get good value for their money and courteous treatment at all times. Northwest Tire & Service is proud to have served its customers for many years and would like to invite you to visit one of our locations.
