About
Hi, I'm Dick Portillo and I welcome you to The Portillo Restaurant Group and its four different concepts (Portillo's Hot Dogs, Barnelli's Pasta Bowl, Key Wester Fish & Pasta House and Hemingway's Bar and Luigi's House and Julian's Bar). I hope you will find the time to visit each of the concepts and enjoy them as much as I have enjoyed developing them. Following is the history of how this all came about. Dick Portillo was born at 1333 West Van Buren in Chicago, Illinois. His family then moved to a government-subsidized housing project on Mohawk Street, called Mother Francis Cabrini Housing Project, now part of Cabrini Green. After his father started earning an income of $2,000 a year, they were prompted to leave and moved to 1617 South Central Park. His family later moved to the southwest suburbs. He was a 1957 graduate of Argo Community High School at 63rd and Harlem. After High School, he served a tour in the Marine Corps. The first Portillo's hot dog stand known as The first Portillo's hot dog stand known as "The Dog House" opened in 1963 on North Avenue in Villa Park. Owner and Founder Dick Portillo, invested $1,100 into a 6'x12' trailer without a bathroom or running water. To get the water he needed, he ran a 250 ft. hose from an adjacent building into his trailer. By 1967 "The Dog House" was a success and was ready for a new look. After it was remodeled it was renamed "Portillo's" and over the years has grown: Portillo’s expanded to Southern California in 2005 and Indiana in 2006 and has over 3700 employees and a total of 46 units and a catering and shipping division, Portillo's Home Kitchen. Portillo's continues to explore areas in both Chicagoland and Southern California. The stores' decor reflect Dick Portillo's love of history. From 1920's, '30's and '50's themes, to a Colorado mine shaft he visited, to a Chicago street scene reminiscent of his old 16th and Central Park neighborhood, each restaurant has a distinctive atmosphere that is very personal to him. In 1987, Dick Portillo introduced a new concept, Barney's restaurant serving award-winning ribs, chicken, sandwiches, and salads. Further expansions led to another successful restaurant concept named Barnelli's Pasta Bowl featuring a variety of pastas with homemade sauces, gourmet salads, and hand tossed pizza. Barnelli's first opened in 1993 in Schaumburg with additional locations in Naperville, Vernon Hills, Glendale Heights, Niles, Summit, Crystal Lake, Chicago, Willowbrook and Merrillville, IN. In August of 1975, he and his family embarked on their first vacation to Key West, FL. They enjoyed the experience and tropical setting so much that they have continued to go every year since. As they became familiar with everything Key West had to offer, he thought "Why not capture all that Key West is, and develop it into a restaurant?" So after years of planning, another new concept was opened in Naperville in August of 1996, the Key Wester Fish & Pasta House and Hemingway's Bar, complete with a waterfall, 2,200 gallon salt water aquarium and accented with other original nautical memorabilia from Key West, Florida. The Key Wester restaurant offers a wide variety of seafood and pasta specialties with seating for over 500 and live entertainment at Hemingway's Bar. The Key Wester, also has availability for events up to 150 people for any occasion. Today the Portillo Restaurant Group is still expanding with the latest concept Luigi's House. Luigi's House restaurant concept was inspired from Dick's memories of his trips to Italy and the Mediterranean. Luigi's House opened in Aurora on Rte. 59 in September 2000. Luigi's House and garden area have been meticulously designed to create the feeling of dining in a private Italian home. Luigi's House offers cozy Italian dining, which includes authentic traditional Italian cuisine in an Italian/Mediterranean atmosphere with seating for over 450, including party rooms available for up to 85 people for any occasion. Portillo's Home Kitchen is the catering division, serving our award winning family recipes, renowned product quality and unparalleled service. It offers a wide range of products from our famous Italian beef, fresh pasta trays, gourmet salads and award-winning BBQ ribs.
