About
1919 After his time in the army, John Ramey buys a small grocery store in Springfield, Missouri. When this small neighborhood grocery store proved to be successful, he expanded his grocery business to eight small stores. 1939 Ramey establishes the area's first modern supermarket in an empty field outside of town. Due to the economy during World War II, Ramey consolidates his eight smaller stores into this one supermarket. 1946 Ramey sells the supermarket to two Kansas City men. These men build a second Ramey supermarket in 1954, a third in 1957 and a fourth in 1965, all located in Springfield. 1967, January 15 All four stores are sold to the Cohen family through Roswil Inc., a Maryland-based company.
