In 1927, just before the Great Depression, J. Roy Davis, Sr. and Lawrence Switzer created a company to provide fresh roasted coffee to local and regional grocery stores. As the company grew, they learned about buying the raw beans, the intricacies of different roasting processes and, especially, the simple but deep pleasure that a quality cup of coffee can bring. By the late '60's, J. Roy Davis, Jr., now succeeding his father as President and CEO, refocused the strategy of S&D. With the expanding influence of a few major national brands in the consumer market, Davis identified opportunities on the commercial side of the coffee business, concentrating on a customer base of restaurants, hospitals, offices and convenience stores instead of small grocery stores. SnD CoffeeIn May of 2000, S&D acquired the Boston, Massachusetts based Victor Coffee. Victor Coffee is the oldest continuous coffee roaster in the nation, dating back to 1796, born out of the aftermath of the Boston Tea Party, the colorful and dramatic protest to "taxation without representation". This acquisition allowed S&D to further its development of the New England area. Until the outbreak of World War I, the Victor logo- a Roman chariot in full charge- was the subject of a most original promotional campaign. A life-size portrayal of the chariot, drawn by four white horses and driven by a charioteer, was transported around New England in a specially constructed freight car. The chariot would ride through the main street of each town, coming to rest outside the local store selling Victor Coffee. Alan & Rhyne Davis It has always been and still is a family affair at S&D... Alan & Rhyne Davis, Co- Chairmen of the Board Through the years, Victor has prided itself on providing quality coffees to hotels, restaurants, vending and offices. S&D complements Victor's programs through a greater offering of product variety and an increase in service support to all customers. In August of 2000, S&D realigned to poise itself for continued future growth. * Roy Davis Jr., Chairman-Emeritus * Alan Davis & Rhyne Davis, Co- Chairmen of the Board * Ron Hinson, President & CEO * Steve Cole, Executive Vice President & CFO Along with management changes, S&D has also completed several plant expansions, bringing its commercial roaster count to four and increasing its capacity to 100 million pounds a year and adding a new green bean unloading, handling and silo storage system. The most recent improvements completed in 2006 were made to the tea handling facility that has doubled blending capacity to 22 million pounds annually. The state-of-the-art tea blending facility was completed to allow flexibility to formulate custom tea blends for customers as well as meet the manufacturing demands of S&D tea brands. Ron Hinson "I’m very close to the Davis family...they allow me to spread my wings on an ongoing basis. Because the ownership of the company allows me to concentrate on the future, I’m able to focus on what’s going to take our business to the next level." - Ron Hinson, President & CEO And the journey continues.
