Schrader started in the petroleum business, serving customers in all of Larimer County and headquartered in Fort Collins. During the early years, Schrader’s son Wayne K. helped out at the family business by pulling weeds, painting pumps and handling other odd jobs for the company. Soon after the Senior Wayne retired, son Wayne became a privately held company called Schrader Oil Company, handling almost every chore conceivable, from bookkeeping to delivery and building several service stations around Fort Collins area. Schrader Oil Co. initially followed the traditional business model by leasing stations to dealers who offered mechanical services as well as pumping gas. Over time Schrader Oil Co. realized customer demands were changing so they changed right along with them. As dealers also retired, Schrader Oil Co. assumed management of each service station, hiring full-time employees to keep things running smoothly. Service bays were transformed into car washes and bigger convenience stores, and more self-serve islands were added to meet customer demands. Credit card self-serve pumps became the standard. Transactions can be handled in seconds, a far cry from the early days when credit transactions often took several minutes to complete. As the business continued to grow and thrive, more Schraders joined in. Wayne’s wife Phyllis has been a long-term consultant and advisor for company operations. A third generation - Perry, Steve and Jennifer - became stockholders. Working together, the family has built a legacy of more than 21stores owned and operated by Schrader Oil Co. A fleet of transports delivers gas daily from terminals in Denver to each of the stores along the northern Front Range. Strong supporters of the Fort Collins community, the Schrader family has supported a variety of causes such as the Colorado State University athletic department’s McGraw Athletic Center and Poudre Valley Hospital. Throughout the years, various members of the family have served on boards such as the Colorado Petroleum Marketer’s Association and the National Oil Jobbers Council. Phyllis and Wayne were also honored with the Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Hope Award in 2000 for their outstanding contributions to the community. Another Generation of Schraders is continuing the family oil business that has grown to more than 180 employees. Looking ahead, the company plans to continue its success by offering what it has since 1937 - convenience for its customers. Through unrelenting dedication to providing the best service possible, Schrader Oil Co. will persistently work to be the consumer’s choice in Northern Colorado.
