Shemin — The Landscape Supply Company had its beginnings in 1955 when its founder, Emanuel (Manny) Shemin, began to convert his family's retail greenhouse and nursery center into a wholesale horticultural distribution business serving the needs of the landscape professional. Mr Shemin perceived the need and opportunity for this kind of operation as a result of increasing real estate values which forced the producers to locate further and further away from their markets causing extremely long supply lines to meet the needs of the enormous building boom which occurred following World War II. In 1967, Shemin relocated from the Bronx, New York to a site in Greenwich, CT, and began to develop the very first 'one-stop' horticultural distribution center in the United States. His plan was to provide everything at one location that the landscape professional needed to help them operate a profitable business. By the mid-1970's he had 50 employees, served 3,000 customers and stocked about 5,000 items. It is a reflection of Shemin's foresight and vision that this same 'one-stop' concept continues to permeate the Shemin organization, and the location in Greenwich, CT continues to this day as a flagship operation in the Shemin organization.
