About
SkyTel has been pioneering connections since it was founded in 1988. We have been the innovators behind many of the wireless communication tools we take for granted today. Having ownership of three nationwide wireless data networks (FLEX, ReFLEX, and Mobitex), we have introduced many groundbreaking firsts to the marketplace. SkyTel was purchased in June, 2008 by Velocita Wireless, another pioneer in delivering premier wireless data products and services. The companies were a logical pairing. Both of these companies have deep roots in delivering wireless solutions to business and government, tried and tested industrial-strength nationwide networks and reputations for delivery quality service to its customers. The combined company relaunched as SkyTel to leverage the brand’s reputation for customer service and its longstanding relationships with the nation’s most successful organizations. The new company will continue its leadership role in wireless messaging while aggressively pursuing the fastest growing segment of wireless – machine to machine (M2M) communication. No matter where you turn, industry analysts from ABI Research to Yankee Group to Harbor Research all agree that M2M presents a huge growth opportunity over the next few years. By repurposing our network assets, distribution channels and expertise delivering wireless solutions to business and government, we are immediately positioned to take advantage of this growth market. In fact, SkyTel already has over half a million M2M users on our networks today, immediately catapulting the new company into a leadership position in this burgeoning industry. SkyTel is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Wireless Holdings, as was Velocita Wireless before its purchase of SkyTel and subsequent decision to relaunch under the SkyTel name and brand. United Wireless is a leading provider of narrowband machine-to-machine (M2M) and telemetry solutions. In addition to its SkyTel operations, it provides wireless network infrastructure technology through its Mobitex Technology subsidiary (based in Gothenburg, Sweden). It also has operations in China and Australia and has network customers across five continents.
