In true entrepreneurial spirit, Dennis Slack opened the first Slack’s Hoagie Shack on November 6 in1988. Using start up capital from his own savings and a loan from a bank, he opened his first store in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia. The store’s success was immediate as people flocked to Slack’s to buy the best hoagie in Philadelphia, reflected in the purchase of 10,000 sandwiches in the first 2 months of business. Maria Gallagher from the Philadelphia Daily News was the first media type to discover Slack’s Hoagie Shack and sing the praises of the quality food and service. Shortly after her article, the "Mystery Muncher" from the Philadelphia Inquirer joined the throng of Slack’s devotees after sampling the best hoagie. Slack’s was voted "Best of Philly" which launched the restaurant from a neighborhood hot spot to the status of a city-wide and regional phenomenon. In 1990 Slack’s Hoagie Shack opened their 2nd store in the Holmesburg section of Philadelphia. Their legions of supporters grew multifold.
