The man behind the success of Giovanni’s Pizza in Santa Barbara is Danny Babai. Danny began the business during his first attempt at retirement. His background was in the food and restaurant industry working with Host International and managing Charlie Brown’s. He then owned and operated his own coffee shop style restaurant called Tiffany’s located in Riverside, CA. His first foray into the pizza business was when he bought a failing pizza place in Southern California and turned it around with new recipes and personal attention to quality and customer service. In 1979 the original Giovanni’s Pizza on State Street opened. Success was born as Danny brought his pizza knowledge and fresh recipes from down south. The keys are using only the freshest ingredients, homemade sauces and fresh dough made daily. Giovanni’s Pizza is known for our wonderful Chicago style thick crust, but we are happy to make thin crust on request. Our loyal customer base is world wide as many travelers who visit our city come in and get a pizza each time they visit Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara Family has been the cornerstone of our success from day one. Birthday parties, family celebrations, children’s sports teams, local school lunches and supporting community festivals is a large part of our weekly business. For many years we invited students from a cooking school in Southern California to a class on making pizza. Sharing our love of good food and business with the community has always been an important part of Giovanni’s as we support numerous local charities and community events. At age 70, Danny Babai the founder of Giovanni’s, is stepping aside for the next generation. Still heavily involved, Danny has enlisted his son Daniel and his wife Loni to continue the tradition of Giovanni’s. All of the children have been involved in the restaurant at different times of their lives and it is important that it remain a family business with attention to the details that have made Giovanni’s a success. Daniel has worked at the State Street location since he was a young boy, and has worked at various locations including Isla Vista. Loni, his wife, has been managing the restaurant for many years now and brings with her years of restaurant experience from her days as a server and hostess. The best businesses are run with consistency and quality by passing down only the best recipes and traditions through the family, and that’s exactly what we have done here at Giovanni’s.
