It all started when the Lackland Family was vacationing in California in the 1970’s when Fred Lackland decided to look at a Los Angeles “public storage” facility. In an effort to enhance his reputation and offering as not only a homebuilder, a banker friend had mentioned the new phenomenon of self storage to him, and it sparked his interest. As the family approached the facility, they were greeted by a nasty dog, which was the extent of security back in the ‘70’s. At home in New Jersey, Fred and his brother Dave, decided to build a small storage facility in Piscataway. The year was 1977, and Lackland Self Storage was born.
