Pioneer was the presenting sponsor of the 2009 Central Iowa JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. More than 450 Pioneer employees joined more than 15,000 volunteers for the Meals from the Heartland packaging event held in September 2009. Meals from the Heartland, an organization based in Des Moines, coordinates groups of volunteers to package soy, dried vegetables, a vitamin tablet and rice into nutritious meals for starving and malnourished people living in countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria and South Africa. Volunteers packaged more than four million meals in total. Fifty-four Pioneer teams, representing several departments across the business, packaged more than 140,000 meals, which was about 3.5 percent of the total meals packaged.
